Examples of Previous Internship Projects

Real Estate Investment NewCo

Through primary and secondary market research, our intern analyzed the dynamics of the market for single family homes in a specific area. This research consisted of deep dives into ownership dynamics (renting vs. owning), population dynamics, and the economic development of the target market. The project culminated in the presentation of a business plan, pro forma financial model, and return scenarios for the new investment company.

Series Seed Investment in Green Technology Company

An intern worked directly with the management team to perform due diligence through primary and secondary research sources on a Series Seed investment being led by Castellan Group, performing modeling of return scenarios, building a competitive landscape, and finding mitigants to risks discovered during the investment process.

Portfolio Evaluation Models

An intern worked directly with the investment team to build a standardized internal review model (3 statement and operations) for portfolio companies that allows the team to quickly input new financial or operating information and keep an up-to-date picture of the business.

Budgeting Process for Portfolio Company

An intern worked directly with the investment team and a portfolio company’s senior management to construct a 6-month operating budget. This budget was based off projections that were produced through collaboration with the company’s management team and the investment team, a process that the intern was actively involved with.

Testimonials

  • “Castellan has been an exceptional internship experience; it is a unique opportunity to contribute to something that is constantly growing, where your inputs are always valued. I have truly found that the work I contribute has real meaning, and my interactions with the other employees have always been amazing. Working for Castellan has benefitted me in that I am able to work on projects that both interest me and provide value to the business model, which is sometimes difficult to find with an internship. I also feel that there are tremendous opportunities to grow at the company, even within an internship. I have found that my internship has evolved over time, introducing me into other parts of the business or in working on completely new ideas.

I have grown to love Louisville, as it feels like a very exciting city with something always going on; there is always a new place to explore, and it feels like a promising place to live and grow.”
-Ben Davison, Summer 2021 Intern, May 2022 Graduate and current full-time Quantitative Analyst for Castellan Group
  • "My summer internship with Castellan was extremely rewarding. I had the opportunity to work on meaningful projects where I learned how to create Excel models and effectively conduct research. I was able to attend meetings with C-suite executives and was always asked to provide my own insights, which pushed me to think critically about companies. As an intern, I was given the opportunity to suggest what types of projects I wanted to work on and what skills I wanted to develop, allowing me to make the most out of my time with Castellan.

Castellan has a great workplace culture where I felt comfortable asking questions and sharing my inputs. Camden was an excellent mentor from whom I learned a lot over the course of the summer. The team at Castellan really went above and beyond to make my internship experience a positive one."
-Sarah Gao, 2022 Summer Analyst, Stanford University
  • "Having interned all throughout undergrad, I was never given the opportunity to handle impactful projects or attend meetings with C-suite executives like I was at the Castellan Group. The team is full of dedicated and intelligent mentors that are willing to help educate at any step of the projects you may take on. I was given the chance to work on the multi-million-dollar budget for a startup in Louisville that was expanding and was included in the meetings with the CFO of the startup to discuss and edit the budget. The close team and tight finance community in Louisville meant interns at the Castellan Group were consistently given exposure to some of the biggest names in finance in the region. At the Castellan Group, you get paid in both a salary and in meaningful and educational experience."
-Cooper Winrich, Summer 2021 Intern, University of Kentucky
  • "Working at Castellan has been one of the most rewarding professional opportunities I have been a part of. The ability to get experience on both public and private equity as well as a variety of special situations as a sophomore is unparalleled.

Over the course of the summer internship, I was able to take on real responsibility. I routinely was asked to provide my own insights and stock reports, a role that was both humbling and pushed me to further develop the way I think about companies. This development culminated in the chance to present my research directly to a client. I always felt like a respected member of a team and I think that level of trust, and the expectations that come with it, is exactly what I was looking for.

Overall, I would say Castellan is a great fit if you are truly interested in optimizing your internship experience around learning and exposure. The work is compelling and there are many opportunities to make a specific task or project your own. The familial culture further makes this a great fit and Barry, Kevin, Camden, Shannon, and Kate all made the transition to Louisville easy and fun. Coming from Connecticut I was initially hesitant about living in Kentucky, but after seeing the lively restaurant scene, visiting some of the historic sites like the Muhammad Ali Museum, and even getting to sit in the owner's box at a Louisville City game, I would happily visit in a heartbeat."
-Vidur Hareesh, Summer 2021 Intern, University of Virginia
